League of Legends is one of the world's two most popular MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). Since its launch in 2009, it remains one of the biggest titles released by Riot Games.

The game is played between two 5-player teams battling to defeat each other. To win, the team must destroy their opponent’s base, called the Nexus, which lasts roughly 20 to 45 minutes.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, often revered as CS:GO, is a tactical first-person shooter game from Valve. Here, the two teams, called the terrorists, and the counter-terrorists, face off on the field with opposing objectives depending on the game mode. 

In the esports scene, the game mode used for competition is Bomb Defusal, and the goal of the counter-terrorists is to stop the terrorists from planting the bomb and detonating it. To do this, they must defend the bomb site and keep the opposing team from entering.

Valorant is the newest esport game title on the least, released by Riot Games in mid-2020 as a first-person tactical shooter game. It is set in the distant future, where two teams of five compete in an exhilarating battle of skill and unique abilities. 

Though still relatively new to the scene, Valorant quickly cemented itself as one of the most compelling multiplayer games globally. It features various iconic characters, called agents, that have elevated the game. These agents come from different parts of the world and offer varying abilities that result in dynamic gameplay.

Each game lasts 30 minutes to an hour as the teams compete to win 13 rounds by either defending or attacking the designated bomb sites. In the case of a 12th-round tie, the teams go into overtime to compete in more rounds until a winner is established.

Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft II is a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) game where the main goal is to destroy the opponent’s base. To do this, players must build a strong army and develop a good strategy to defeat the competing army. The biggest tournaments for the game are the StarCraft II World Championship Series and the Intel Extreme Masters.

Released by Psyonix in 2015, Rocket League is a video game that mixes soccer and car racing to deliver unique gameplay. The game is played inside a soccer-style stadium where car avatars are used to score points. It has a relatively smaller following compared to other games on the list. However, watching pro players compete in the annual Rocket League Championship series is exciting.

Rainbow Six is a first-person shooter game published by Ubisoft based on a novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. It’s a game set in the post-Cold War period where two competing teams are separated into terrorists and counter-terrorists. The game’s major esports tournament is called the Six Invitational, an annual event hosted by Ubisoft where teams worldwide are invited to compete.

Arena of Valor is a MOBA from Chinese developer TiMi Studio Group and was published for PC by Riot Games. It is played similarly to LoL, where players select their hero character with unique abilities. Among the many things players can do in-game include demolishing structures, killing minions and monsters, and attacking other players.

Fortnite, released in 2017 by Epic Games, is a battle royale quest for survival. In the battleground, players must find firearms and armour and collect resources using their pickaxe. These resources can be used to build fortifications and entrapment to protect them from enemies. 

With hundreds of players to fight with, the goal is to be the last man standing to claim the prize. When it comes to Fortnite tournaments, competitors can compete in solo or duo events.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, or PUBG, is another famous Player vs Player (PvP) battle royale game. It is rough and gritty, with over a hundred players battling for survival in a death match. Similar to Fortnite, albeit without the building aspect, players compete to be the last man standing as the arena becomes smaller as the round progresses.

Overwatch is a team-based first-person shooter game from Blizzard Entertainment. The multiplayer game takes place in the distant future, where the opposing teams, using their chosen hero characters, try to win either as the offensive or defensive team. The biggest tournament for the game is the Overwatch League, where teams worldwide compete.

Blizzard’s Hearthstone is another household name in the esports industry. It’s a collectable card game developed to expand the provider’s Warcraft series. With the player’s deck of cards, the goal is to defeat opponents using cards that function as weapons, spells, and more.

Heroes of the Storm is another game on the list from Blizzard Entertainment. It’s a team-based 5v5 battle arena game where the opposing teams compete to destroy the other’s ‘Core’. Both teams must first demolish defensive structures and the players guarding them to reach this structure.

Call of Duty is a first-person shooter game launched in 2003 by Activision. It’s a game set during World War II, available as a campaign and in competitive mode. In esports, it’s played as a 3v3 or 6v6 game in a 12-team Call of Duty League, which is currently the biggest tournament.
